1       Introduction to waste lithium battery recycling channels

1.1      General process of waste lithium battery recycling

The general process of waste lithium battery recycling includes collection and classification, discharge treatment, dismantling and sorting, crushing and shredding, metal extraction and recycling, environmental protection treatment and discharge, and product reuse and other links. These links are interconnected and mutually supportive, together constituting a complete industry chain of waste lithium battery recycling.

Collection and classification: Waste lithium batteries come from a wide range of sources, including municipal recycling facilities, battery producers, new energy vehicle manufacturers and end users. Waste lithium batteries and factory off-cuts are collected by setting up recycling points and cooperating with relevant enterprises. Collected waste lithium batteries need to be preliminarily categorized according to the type of battery (e.g., power batteries, 3C batteries, etc.), capacity, health condition and other factors for subsequent processing.

Discharge treatment: In specialized workshops, waste batteries are deep discharged using a brine solution or other safe and effective methods. This step is designed to ensure the safety of the batteries during subsequent treatment and also facilitates the extraction of metallic elements.

Dismantling and sorting: The waste lithium batteries are dismantled into shells, aluminum foils, copper foils, cathode and anode materials and other parts by manual or mechanical means. The disassembled parts are further sorted for targeted treatment and recycling.

Crushing and shredding: Battery materials containing metallic elements are crushed and processed into smaller particles or powders. For materials that require further processing, a more detailed crushing process is carried out.

Metal extraction and recycling: Extraction of metallic elements, such as lithium, cobalt and nickel, from crushed materials by chemical or physical means.

Environmental protection treatment and discharge: Throughout the recycling process, environmental protection regulations need to be strictly observed to ensure that pollutants such as waste water, waste gas and waste residue are discharged according to standards. At the same time, waste that cannot be reused needs to be properly treated and disposed of.

Product reuse: Recovered metallic elements and other materials can be used to make new batteries, electrode materials or other related products.

1.2      Overview of the main recycling channels for waste lithium batteries

Resource Integration: Utilize own resources and channel advantages to integrate resources of waste lithium batteries and improve recycling efficiency.

Environmental responsibility: Actively fulfill our environmental responsibility and promote the recovery and treatment of waste lithium batteries and resource recycling.

2       Lithium battery industry recycling mode introduction

2.1      Echelon utilization mode

The echelon utilization mode refers to disassembling, testing and screening of waste lithium batteries or cells, and then re-composing them into healthy battery packs or battery systems in order to realize the recycling of lithium batteries. This mode is mainly for lithium batteries with a battery life between 20% and 80%, especially lithium iron phosphate batteries, which are more suitable for echelon utilization due to their longer cycle life and higher safety. Through echelon utilization, the overall service life of the battery can be effectively extended, reducing the waste of resources. At the same time for the energy storage system, echelon utilization of batteries can significantly reduce its construction costs.

2.2      Recycling mode

Recycling mode refers to the separation of valuable metal materials such as nickel, cobalt and lithium from waste lithium batteries by physical and chemical means, and then made into metal compounds or raw materials for lithium batteries. This is currently one of the main recycling modes for power lithium batteries in China. The recycling mode can efficiently recover valuable metal elements in waste lithium batteries and realize the maximum utilization of resources.

3       The significance of recycling waste lithium batteries

²  Resource saving and reuse

Waste lithium batteries contain a large amount of valuable metal elements such as lithium, cobalt and nickel. These metals are in great demand in the new energy industry. Recycling waste batteries an effectively reduce the exploitation of primary mineral resources, thus saving resources. Recycling metal elements in waste lithium batteries not only provides a stable supply of resources for related industries, but also reduces production costs. For battery manufacturers, recycling metal resources in waste batteries can reduce the procurement cost of primary mineral resources and improve the economic efficiency of enterprises through internal recycling of resources.

²  Environmental protection and pollution reduction

Waste lithium batteries contain heavy metals, such as mercury, cadmium and lead, which are harmful to the environment and human body. By recycling and treating used batteries, heavy metals can be centralized and recycled, reducing the harm to the environment caused by their seepage into soil and water. The electrolyte in lithium-ion batteries contains organic solvents and lithium salts, which are toxic and corrosive. Recycling and disposal of waste batteries can avoid the pollution of soil, water and air caused by electrolyte leakage and reduce environmental risks.

²  Promote industrial upgrading and job creation

Battery recycling, dismantling, sorting, metal extraction and reuse will drive the development of related equipment manufacturing, technology research and development, logistics and transportation industries, promote the upgrading and transformation of environmental protection industry and create new employment opportunities. With the rapid development of new energy vehicles and other fields, the demand for lithium-ion batteries continues to grow. Recycling of waste batteries can provide a certain supply of raw materials for battery production, alleviate the tight supply of batteries and ensure energy security. At the same time, it will also promote the optimization of economic structure and sustainable development.

²  Reducing carbon emissions and increasing resource efficiency

The production process of batteries consumes large amounts of energy and generates carbon emissions. By recycling materials from old batteries, the need to produce new batteries can be reduced, thereby lowering overall carbon emissions. Recycling of waste lithium batteries is an important step towards resource recycling and sustainable development. Recycling and disposing of waste batteries can reduce resource waste and environmental pollution, and promote the green development of the economy and society.

Annexes

Part 1: CBC Price Sources and Collection Criteria

Price sources

The price is collected by dedicated price collectors every working day through telephone, communication software, email and other means to collect quotations and other transaction data from bidding companies. In order to ensure the accuracy and comprehensiveness of the data collected, the price collectors try to collect as much information as possible from manufacturers, buyers and traders of the products, from multiple perspectives.

Collection Criteria

²  Criteria for determining effective values: If the collected price parameters (including the product's indicators, origin, trading place, transaction price, trading volume, trading method and other factors that can affect the product pricing) are correct, clear and complete, the data will be judged valid and can be entered into the sample database.

²  Price calculation: The collected sample data were standardized according to the CBC price calculation model. In this model, various variables such as price type, trading volume, trading pattern and enterprise influence of data will be converted or weighted accordingly, and finally the mainstream price that is most in line with the current trading situation of the market will be calculated.

²  Handling outliers: After standardization of the sample data, the data deviating from the mainstream price by more than 10% will be reviewed and analyzed. If there are errors in the process of data collection and calculation, the corrected data will be re-entered into the sample database for standardized processing again, and finally the corrected mainstream market price will be obtained. If the data collection and calculation process is correct, the data will be removed after review and indicating the cause of the anomaly.

²  Method of setting prices in inactive periods: In some periods, the spot market may be inactive, resulting in actual transaction data collected less than the minimum amount of data required for CBC's calculation. In this case, CBC will supplement the data by collecting the quotation or valuation spot from price-collecting enterprises (including producers, purchasers and traders) that have signed bid purchasing agreements.

²  Price review: Before the price is released, the price must be fully reviewed by senior members of the analyst team. If there is any deviation, the price will be rejected for recalculation. If it is correct, it must be signed by the reviewer before it can be released.

²  Price release: Only the approved price can be released. At the same time, all data involved in the entire process of calculating, reviewing and publishing this price will be stored in the CBC back office system so that it can be accessed and reviewed by the research team for this product at any time.
