Critical metals producer Alpha HPA has started stage two construction on what it claims is the world’s largest high-purity alumina facility, in Gladstone, Queensland, Australia.

The ten-hectare facility builds upon the existing stage one operation, utilising Australian-developed process IP (intellectual property).

Upon completion, the facility is expected to produce more than 10,000 tonnes of high-purity aluminium products annually.

The expansion will not only create 120 local jobs but also 300 construction jobs.

Alpha HPA’s process technology positions the company to manufacture a broad range of ultra-high-purity aluminium materials.

The products are designed to be low-carbon, cost-competitive and will benefit from the established industrial infrastructure in Gladstone.

The company’s process is designed for the extraction and purification of aluminium from industrial feedstock.

To fund this stage two development, Alpha HPA has secured a A$400m ($271.18m) Australian Government debt facility and raised an additional A$180m in equity.

Alpha HPA managing director Rimas Kairaitis said: “The start of stage two construction at our Gladstone site not only underscores our commitment to innovation and excellence but also solidifies our position as a global leader in ultra-high-purity aluminium materials.

“We are proud to leverage our Australian-owned and developed process IP in creating a state-of-the-art facility to service high technology electronics industries that are so important in the energy transition.

“Securing extensive funding support from our shareholders and the Australian and Queensland Governments and has been pivotal in moving this project forward, and we are now well-positioned to progress to full-scale production.

“The economic and community benefits for Gladstone will be substantial, with long-term job creation and opportunities for local businesses.”
