Iron-ore miner Champion Iron has halted operational activities at the Bloom Lake mine in response to forest fires north of its operations.
The company said on Saturday that the forest fires were only a few kilometres from Bloom Lake, prompting an emergency response protocol and gradual evacuation of its workforce.
On Friday evening, the community of the nearby Labrador City was ordered to evacuate.
According to local news reports, Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey said on Sunday that a change in wind direction, cooler temperatures and possible precipitation made for favourable conditions for tackling the wildfire threatening the town.
CTV News quoted the Premier as saying that the blaze remained about 6 km from Labrador City and about 1 km from the town’s landfill.
