Samsung SDI Co., the world’s sixth-largest electric vehicle cell maker, will establish a Department of Battery Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University.

Samsung SDI announced on Friday that it held a signing ceremony for the Department of Battery Engineering the previous day at Sungkyunkwan University's Natural Sciences Campus in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province.

The department will be a four-year undergraduate program within the College of Engineering, linked to employment opportunities. Sungkyunkwan University plans to admit 30 new students annually for ten years starting in 2026.

Students will receive tailored education covering battery materials, cells, modules, and packs.

Graduates of this department will also have potential employment at Samsung SDI.

The Department of Battery Engineering aims to nurture specialists who will lead the rapidly growing battery sector, particularly in the global electric vehicle market, and contribute to fostering talent in the national strategic industry.

"Securing and nurturing excellent talent is the future competitiveness of Samsung SDI. Through this agreement, we aim to secure key talent who can lead the battery market and solidify our technological prowess as a global top-tier company," said Samsung SDI CEO Choi Yoon-ho.

Since 2021, Samsung SDI has been running programs to nurture battery talent in collaboration with educational institutions such as Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), Seoul National University, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Hanyang University, Sungkyunkwan University and Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST).
